My Story…

I began my journey in holistic health the same way that many have… with my own personal health experience that greatly affected my life. At the age of 22, I noticed major changes occurring in my body. Having always been a very naturally lean person, I noticed that I was starting to put on weight very quickly. At first I was pleased, as I spent much of my high school years trying to gain weight in order to appear what I thought would be more attractive and curvy. However, I noticed this was starting to spiral into more weight, and I found myself needing to adjust my diet and start working out at the gym. Along with this, I realized I was no longer getting my period.

I finally went to a gynecologist and an ultrasound showed with clarity that I had benign cysts on my ovaries. This along with my hormone levels indicated that I had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), typically present in affected females at the onset of puberty. How did I have this? Where did it come from? And what would I do? I didn’t really understand, and I wasn’t given any direction from physicians other than taking the birth control pill and later, Metformin (a medication to lower blood sugar).

It wasn’t until a couple of years later I was exposed to the world of holistic health. I hadn’t even dreamed that there were natural growing herbs, dietary changes, and shifts in subtle energy body (what was THAT??) that could drastically heal not only my PCOS and ailments, but many of the stress-induced complications that were a direct result.

When I discovered Ayurveda, I finally felt like I began to understand myself. My sensitive Vata nature, why I act in certain ways under stress, how I was eating and living a lifestyle that was completely the opposite of what is calming and nurturing to my innate state of being. Basically, I was listening to the noise out there of what experts believed to be “healthy” and not listening to my own body anymore. My disconnection with my body stemmed from developing PCOS, and I sought control for so long.

Now I look and see individuals and the world through an Ayurvedic lense, and it gratifies me deeply to hear the stories of others and share my own in the hopes it will offer a connection and that my knowledge will provide hope that prescriptions and standard Western treatments are NOT the only solution. Ayurveda is a rich and ancient holistic science designed to cure ailments, not just treat them, in order for you to get back to feeling… yourself.
